What does the Constitution require for a candidate to be approved as a federal judge? The candidate must be a lawyer. The candidate must be 50 years of age or older. The candidate needs to have served previously as a judge in a state court system. There are no constitutional requirements for becoming a federal judge.

There are no constitutional requirements for becoming a federal judge. The president may nominate whoever they think is the best candidate for the position - however most nominees have previously served as a judge in the Justice system for many years.
