Japan surrendered to end World War II after the United States dropped the atomic bombs. On August 15th, of 1945, the Emperor of Japan  - Hirohito - gave a recorded radio address which announced the surrender of Japan to the Allies. This was only a week after the U.S. dropped the bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
